Extend: Air pressure is gradually introduced into the mast. The compressed air pushes the innermost section upwards. As it reaches its limit, it "catches" or seals against the next outer section, and the pressure then extends that section, and so on, until the mast reaches its desired height.
Retract: Air pressure is released (or locking mechanisms disengaged), allowing the sections to telescope back down into the compact, nested position.
